Space technology that
earns its keep at home
SciHi 2026 asks students for one thing that
is harder than it sounds: a solution a space mission could use, that also helps
people on Earth, built to last on very little.
The constraint is the point
What space forces on a design
Scarce power. No resupply. No repair crew. Temperature swings
that would destroy ordinary hardware. Every gram costs fuel, so nothing
goes up that does not earn its place.
Why that helps on Earth
Those are the same constraints as a village clinic without
reliable power, a farm without a technician nearby, or a sensor that has
to survive a monsoon. Designing for a spacecraft is designing for
scarcity, and scarcity is ordinary here.
The dual-use test
Every submission has to answer both halves in plain language.
The space use case
What would a mission actually use this for, and what does it
replace or improve?
The Earth use case
Who does it help here, with what problem, and why is this
better than what they have now?
If a team cannot articulate
both, the project is not on theme. This is the first thing the
judges check.
SciHi 2025
The first edition ran as the pre-conference hackathon of the
48th (Inter)National Systems Conference, themed "Sustainable Systems for the
Future". It was virtual and mentorship-driven, engaged school students from
across India, and the finale was hosted at DEI.
